Tug & Salvage Lines

Tug lines are one of the most demanding applications in the commercial marine industry due to the high loads and abrasion these ropes experience on each job. Cortland has supplied quality products to tugs all over the world for ship assist, towing, and escort jobs, for many years. Our technologically advanced products such as Plasma® 12x12 offer our customers the following benefits:

  • Lighter and easier to handle
  • Requires fewer crew members
  • Faster tie ups and stand downs
  • Safer - reduces strain and back injuries
  • No fish hooks
  • Reduced costs
  • No maintenance
  • Proven track record in the industry for over 20 years
  • Works well on winches
  • Easy to splice

Pendants

Cortland provides and recommends the use of pendants which are a very popular method for extending the life of tug assist and working lines. Pendants are a shorter length of rope attached to the mainline by either reeving or cow-hitching the lines together. The pendant is on the working end of the main tug hawser and gets most of the abrasion and damage. Thus, the shorter pendant (usually 50-ft to 100-ft in length) can then be replaced, if and when necessary, at a less expensive cost than replacing the 450-ft mainline.

Below is a comprehensive list of all our strength members suitable for Tug and Salvage Lines. These detail the construction types we use and their relative strengths and applications. To find out more about our engineered rope solutions for the tug market, download our Tug & Salvage brochure.

Plasma® 12x12

The 12x12 Construction is designed specifically for high modulus, high strength fibers such as Spectra®, Plasma® enhanced Spectra®, BOB® , and Vectran® . This patented construction addresses the most critical properties of the fibers to provide a very high strength translation efficiency for larger ropes.  This design allows for long lay lengths, making the rope more flexible for bending applications and rope that is easy to inspect and can be quickly spliced using standard 12 strand splicing techniques. Plasma® 12x12 is a 12-strand single braided rope in which each of the 12 strands is, in turn, a 12-strand rope, or braided primary strand.  Plasma® 12x12 is supplied with our standard polyurethane finish, although other coatings can be applied to suit specific applications.

Benefits / Features
  • World's strongest rope for its weight
  • Long lengths available
  • High flex fatigue and abrasion resistance
  • Easy to splice, inspect, and repair
  • Neutrally buoyant in water
  • Select sizes are ABS & DNV type approved
Spectra® 12 Strand

Spectra® 12 Strand provides very high strength, low stretch and excellent abrasion resistance in a single braid construction. Pound for pound, it is over 3 times as strong as polyester and has less than one half the elongation. Spectra® 12 Strand is easily spliced using a simple lockstitch type splice or 5-4-3 Tuck splice, and its soft, torque free braided construction provides easy handling. Spectra® 12 Strand is supplied with our standard polyurethane finish, although other coatings can be applied to suit specific applications.

Benefits / Features
  • Very low stretch
  • Very high strength
  • Soft hand
  • Torque free
  • Easy splicing
