ROV Cables

Cortland offers a full range of custom main cables providing the power, signal, and mechanical link between a surface vessel and ROV. This can link directly to a "live boated” free swimming ROV or to a deployment system, such as a tether management system (TMS).

Our designs offer the most compact electrical and fiber optic assembly diameter and can be strengthened with either high strength synthetic fibres or multi-wire armoring layers to support the weight of the associated ROV, package, handling forces, vessel motion, and tidal forces.

Main Lift Cables (Wire Armored Reinforced)

Cortland's wire armored reinforced main lift cables offer a variety of combination options of power, signal, and optic layout/sizing. Choose from a full range of component configurations including single, pairs and quads, and optical fibers with various MM SM options. Benefits include:

  • Special thin wall insulation and high temperature capability to 125 degrees centigrade
  • Highest strength small diameter steel wire while maintaining ductility
  • Optimized OD (long lengths can be stored and operated from optimized rig/platform or vessel foot prints)
  • Smaller diameter cables, smaller winches, less deck space
  • Wire layer applied by new "in-house" armoring line allowing shortened lead-times and tight quality control
  • Qualification testing for added confidence from pre-use verification
  • Mechanical and electrical terminations

ROV Tethers

Cortland's tether cables provide services when weight and buoyancy are important. For instance, whether ROV’s make excursions from the TMS or the surface directly, our cables minimize cable weight and drag. Electrical & optical signal, electrical power and mechanical strength can again be custom designed into a suitable cable package by Cortland.

ROV tethers can significantly affect vehicle performance, so are invariably required to be highly flexible and robust while being lightweight enough to offer minimum drag. Small diameter is crucial, and neutral-to-positive buoyancy is frequently an indispensable requirement. In tough conditions, Cortland has it covered.

Subsea Crawler, Trencher, Plough Umbilical Cables

Similar in operation to ROV Main Cables, these umbilical cable types provide electrical power, electrical and/or optical signal and occasionally hydraulic or pneumatic services for a number of operations, such as trenching, sampling, ploughing or surveying.

Most often armoured for both mechanical protection and tensile strength, cables of this type resist the damaging external effects from the seabed conditions, the gruelling dynamics of handling forces, vessel motion and tidal forces, while supporting the weight of the associated package. Where weight is a consideration, however, synthetic fibre reinforcements may also be considered.

Our designs offer the most compact electrical and fibre optic assembly diameter to minimize overall cable OD and therefore handling gear and deck space.

These variants can be produced in long continuous lengths.
